Run This Way #10

(The Yellow Lines #68 / Come, Shadows, Caress Me #90)
Ric Ocasek (ex-The Cars)
, Hang on Tight

Ric
is also the producer of one of the greatest records of rock History, to
me and not only to me (Blue Album, Weezer). His taste for synthesisers
had had an expression in the Cars, but very 80′s. What he brought or
helped being highlighted in Weezer’s sound for this first record might
also be on this point (moogs – a specific synthesiser- mainly). When
Matt Sharp (Weezer’s first bass player) created The Rentals a bit after,
people spoke about The Cars for the resemblance, even if The Rentals
are in a totally different universe in terms of level (way way higher).

This
song is a total achievement, which is absolutely not the case of the
rest of the record in spite of the participation of stars as Billy
Corgan, Ira Elliott (Nada Surf’s brilliant drummer) and Melissa auf der
Maur (Hole, The Smashing Pumpkins later), here on superb backing vocals
and bass. In this song, in spite of its achievement, you can hear the
limits of the singer-songwriter, at least to me (Tom Petty-like voice
and a clear taste for a cheesy sound in spite of the brilliant chords’
progression and composition).
